Sometimes it can be challenging finding non-electronic activities for children. Especially when they get past the age of being entertained with pots, spoons, and anything that makes noise. We think that crafting still holds so much value to children. The imagination is on super-charge, motor-skills are practiced, hand-eye coordination is in full-force, and the feeling of accomplishment after creating something can’t be beat. Crafting still is, in our opinion, a fantastic past time for children! This little project uses easy to find supplies and requires just a bit of skill. Enough to not be a “baby” craft. But, not so much that a child gets easily frustrated. Pull out some yarn and give these monsters a try!

If you have never made a pom-pom, we’ll give you a quick tutorial. Older children can make them themselves (watch them with the scissors!), but smaller children may need help with this step.

Supplies Needed for Pom-Pom Monsters:

  • yarn
  • fork
  • glue
  • items for monster parts: google eyes, pipe cleaners, stickers, markers, etc…

Your pom-pom monster starts out as a basic pom-pom. If you have never made a pom-pom before, we have the basic instructions. If you have, just start putting on “monster parts” on your pom-pom.

Step 1:  Tie an end of your yarn around a fork. Don’t cut the yarn from the skein until you are done with the remaining steps.

Step 2:  Wrap your yarn around and around the fork. Keep it fairly loose to make it easier for you to cut the loops later on. The more you wrap, the fluffier your pom-pom will be. When you have it to the size you would like, go ahead and cut the yarn off the skein. Note: if you would like to be able to hang these or use them for a garland, leave a large bit of yarn on the end before cutting (see picture of ghost below).

Step 3:  Carefully take your yarn off of the fork. Use a small piece of yarn (start with about 6 inches, you can always cut off excess) and tie it tightly around your wrapped yarn. This will hold that yarn in place. Tie it tightly and as evenly as possible.

Step 4:  Being careful not to cut the piece of yarn in the center…cut the looped edges off of each end of your bundle. This will create your pom-pom. Feel free to trim it down a bit to make the puff even.

With your basic pom-pom, you can turn it into a monster simply by adding eyes (one or multiple!), legs, antennae, whatever your kids’ imagination sees for their monster!

Pull out that yarn, crafting bits, glue, and your imaginations, and have a great time on the next rainy day!! Try using different colored yarn, wrap multi-colors and more to get different looking “monsters.”
