When it comes to planning a ski trip in the US, destinations like Colorado and Utah are more often than not the first mountains that come to mind. Understandably so. Families flock to these resorts throughout the winter months to hit the slopes and embrace all that the snow-covered mountains have to offer the young and old.
But what if I told you there is another option that is arguably just as great (if not better!) than the traditional Family Ski Trip destinations?
Enter Big Sky Resort in Montana.
Visiting Big Sky has been on our bucket list for quite some time now. Not only had we heard great things about Big Sky’s “Biggest Skiing in America” slopes but their literal BIG SKY has been calling our names for years now.
Last month I had the privilege of traveling to Big Sky with Lauren with MomTrends and Brianne with Stroller in the City to check out what Big Sky has to offer. To say it didn’t disappoint wouldn’t come close to explaining my newfound love for this area of the country.
With over 15 direct flights flying into Bozeman (Minneapolis, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Denver + more) and a short hour drive to Big Sky, getting to the area is relatively easy. And let’s be real – traveling with kids is a challenge in and of itself and so getting to your destination easily is a priority for moms. And as for lodging, they’ve got that covered too with a range of accommodations, perfect for your needs.
Now when it comes to skiing Big Sky, I found the slopes to be 
expansive in number and space. With over 250 ski runs, 5,800 acres of terrain, a vertical drop of 4,350 ft and some of the most consistent snowfall in the country, they don’t call it The Biggest Skiing in America for no reason. We skied two full days and didn’t come close to hitting up all that the mountain has to offer. Not to mention that in many instances, we had the slopes to ourselves. The mountain is so expansive that even on the busiest weeks, you’ll find some slopes that are wide open for your enjoyment. Don’t believe me? Just check out their Interactive Mountain Map
In addition to having slopes (and lessons) for the littlest members of your family, Big Sky also offers seasonal child care and a free Kids Club (for guests of Big Sky Resorts) in the late afternoon hours for after hour fun for the parents.
It’s been said that 65% of people that visit Big Sky, return to Big Sky. That’s some pretty awesome statistics if you ask me and I get it. Me and my family will be proud to be a part of the 65% and are already planning when we can get back to the beautiful slopes of Big Sky Resort soon.

Ski Lessons
While planning ski lessons for our children is a must on our list of things to-do for a family ski trip (and Big Sky offers incredible Youth Ski Lessons), I’m afraid more often than not we decline taking a lesson ourselves calling it a “hit for the team.” Well I’d strongly encourage you to consider signing yourself up for a lesson during your trip to Big Sky. I had an incredible experience working with a Big Sky ski instructor for two half day lessons and can’t say enough good things about the experience. It’s called self care and you’ll thank me later for encouraging you to sign yourself up too!

Sleigh Ride Dinner
A trip to Big Sky would not be complete without a Sleigh Ride Dinner at Lone Mountain Ranch. This part of our trip was arguably one of my favorite parts. I mean, what could someone not like about taking a sleigh ride to a dinner in a rustic cabin that was complete with three courses, live music, great company and ended with an absolutely breathtaking view of the stars?
It was magical.

Dog Sledding
If you’re looking for an activity off the slopes, see the beautiful Big Sky from a Dog Sled.
In the words of Lauren from MomTrends, dog sledding was both “terrifying and exhilarating at the same time.” Such a great way to spend a day off the slopes.

Big Sky Restaurant Picks
Big Sky Restaurant PicksI’m just going to be straight up honest with ya’ll – my favorite part of any trip is the food. I love researching where to eat and planning our schedule accordingly. If you’re looking to plan a trip to Big Sky, here are a few recommendation:
Andiamo Italian Grill – Absolutely delicious traditional and unique Italian food located right in the heart of the village.
Everett’s 8800 – On top of Andestine mountain, Everett’s is a fantastic spot to stop for lunch in the middle of a day on the slopes. With huge windows overlooking Lone Mountain Peak and a rustic chandelier hanging above, this spot was a perfect spot to rest, fill our bellies and enjoy all that Big Sky has to offer. Note: Be sure to grab a reservation here as it’s a very popular spot.
Gallatin Riverhouse Grill – While not on the Big Sky Resort property, this is a must visit for anyone traveling to Big Sky as going here is a true Mountain Experience and the best BBQ around (so says every Montanan we spoke with during our time in Big Sky).
Horn & Cantle – If you’re looking for excellent food that’s off the beaten path, Horn & Cantle is your spot. Located at Lone Mountain Ranch, this spot is the perfect combination of your mama’s cooking meets ranch life with a modern twist. Oh and if you’re there for lunch – the Pickle Fried Chicken sandwich is absolutely divine.
While most of the country is welcoming warmer months with open arms and planning their summer vacations, I’ll be over here planning our next Family Ski Trip to Big Sky.
I’m pretty sure I left a little piece of my heart back on the slopes of Big Sky and will for sure be back with littles in tow. Won’t you join me?
