Making the Spring 2017 Trends Your Own

0

I LOVE fashion! Always have. I love to look at the runway shows each season, read multiple fashion magazines each month and study upcoming trends in an effort to stay ahead of the rapidly changing fashion landscape.  I get it, it probably seems really strange, since most people don’t care at all; however, I also get that it’s actually an asset to love something a lot of people don’t.  Especially when, love it or hate it (or somewhere in between), we have to get dressed! As women, how we feel in what we’re wearing affects every part of our day.  If we love it, then we feel confident, pulled together and ready for anything.  Loving the way we look in a particular outfit can even supersede a “fat day” and change our entire outlook.

Given this complicated relationship to fashion, I want to share some of the spring trends for 2017 and how you can integrate them into your existing wardrobe (yes, I said existing). This is one of my favorite things to do with clients. Regardless of what you think, you DO have style! I consider your style to be part of your personal brand – it tells others a lot about who you are and what you are about (even your mood that day).

Welcome Spring

Spring is one of my favorite seasons because we’re all ready for warmer temperatures, fun colors and spending more time outdoors.  This spring, my favorite trends include: feminine details, vibrant stripes, bright floral prints, graphic tees and one-shoulder looks.  There is truly something for everyone, however, because athleisure (the “varsity” trend), all things 80’s, and statement earrings are also popular looks appearing this season.

Finding new ways to freshen up a work look can be challenging, particularly if you’re in a field that requires a more traditional dress code.  This look can transform depending on your own needs using a basic black pant (any style goes) that we all (should) have in our closet.  Liven up your daily grind with a fun floral blouse, bright sunnies and one of two trending shoe styles – punchy pumps or classic loafers amped up by an unexpected platform and metallic hue.   To take it down a notch, add a blazer or sleeveless waistcoat (“vest” to the masses).  If you’re in a more creative field, then roll up the sleeves and add a stack of fun bangles.

For a more casual option, throw on your favorite jeans (cropped or skinny pair best with flat shoes) and add a trending graphic tee.  There are endless options right now with fun and funny messages for every personality.  Finish the look with an ankle wrap ballet flat (ankle adornment is all the rage) or a sportier mule sneaker (mules are also trending in every shoe type).  A crossbody bag is one of my favorite practical ways to accessorize an outfit, as being hands-free is always a good thing!

I’ve included a second casual look featuring stripes and denim jackets, both of which are definitely having a moment this season.  If you are looking to purchase a denim jacket then consider a fresh embroidered version as seen on the runways.  Trendy pieces or ones you know will take a beating (sandbox or finger painting anyone?) do not need to break the bank.  This ensemble, including only the dress, pouch and scarf added up to less than $50!  If you do nothing else this spring, then please do wear sneakers with everything.  They are the most versatile shoe you can own this season.

Regardless of what you think, you DO have style!  I consider your style to be part of your personal brand – it tells others a lot about who you are and what you are about (even your mood that day).

Date night or dinner with the girls is something I always look forward to.  If you don’t already have black leggings, then you need them STAT!  There are so many options these days with coated, leather, prints and more.  I actually like them for day or night so they’re a great transitional piece.  Off-the-shoulder looks have had a big moment lately and fear not, exposed shoulders are staying around!  To update the look, consider one-shoulder or cut out options that work well in both tops and dresses.  For an accessory pop, invest in a fun pair of trending statement earrings (you can find them anywhere) and versatile bangles.

Regardless of your current closet situation, find one or two ways you can amp up your daily look.  Push yourself and be creative, but ultimately, make sure you feel great about it.  I always say that you can wear ANYTHING with confidence.  If you don’t believe me, check out any 4-year old girl rocking a ridiculous ensemble without a care in the world (one currently lives at my house).
