Keep These Ingredients Out Of The Diaper Bag

From the moment we find out we’re going to be parents, whether it be our first child or our last, there’s always an overwhelming amount of emotions that flood us. The love we have for our children from the moment we hear they will be in our lives is almost instant. We, as parents, will do almost anything to keep our little ones safe. Yet sometimes it can be a little tricky when deciding what products to use and to keep around, especially in the diaper bag.

Finding Some Safer Alternatives

With products like Bisphenol-A, Formaldehyde, Talc, Belladonna, and Propylene Glycol being found in baby care products, it’s important to read labels and find healthier, safer alternatives. For many of us, we have heard of these ingredients and know they can be dangerous, but may not know why. We decided to take a deeper look into what makes them bad, and provide some safer alternatives.

Bisphenol – A, or most commonly referred to as BPA, was supposed to have been removed from many of the products we see on store shelves: water bottles, baby teething products and more. Yet surprisingly, after a study was completed and later published by the American Chemical Society, their findings told a different story. As a result, many of us may ask ourselves what are some of the side effects from exposure to BPA? Damage to the brain, reproductive system, heart, and liver are just some of the harm that can come from exposure to BPA. The baby product that is supposed to sooth your child could potentially be harming them down the road. Instead, try these options:

  • Frozen Washcloth – Pull a washcloth through a napkin ring, and dip the tip in water- then freeze. It will be easy to hold, cold enough to sooth, but not too cold to hurt your toddle
  • Frozen Fruit – Fill a mesh feeder with fresh fruit, and freeze it. Using a feeder will prevent any large pieces from becoming a choking hazard, and kids will get some vitamins while soothing their gums
  • Safe Teethers – Try teethers proven to be safe like these silicon Teething Bling necklaces

The fresh clean smell many of us love about newborns is often affiliated with the scent of fresh baby powder. This product has been a staple in homes for many decades but recent lawsuits against companies like Johnson & Johnson in the past couple of years have shown a strong correlation between ovarian cancer and the product’s main ingredient: talcum powder. Instead, seek out talc-free baby powders. Honest Company and Burt’s Bees are two popular brands offering natural alternatives. Safer options are predominately made from cornstarch, rice powder, or kaolin clay to help absorb moisture.
